Choose a Martian within Range and roll a D6. On the roll of 5+, that Martian is Hit.

Q.Do you have to designate a weapon prior to rolling? Can the sword break (say it's the hero's ONLY weapon), even if its ability wasn't triggered?
A. All Hand Weapons have a Combat Bonus that is an optional ability that can be used during a Fight, if you want to use it. It is up to you. You can even decide after the dice are rolled if you want to add the Combat Bonus for a particular Weapon. Also, you only need to roll to see if a Weapon Breaks if you actually use the Weapon's Combat Bonus during that Fight.
So in your example, you would not have to decide to use the bonus of the sword or the Bull Whip until after the dice are rolled. If you get a Tie, use the Bull Whip. If not, don't use it. If you get a 6, use the sword. If not, don't use the sword.
